The Maine Coast has a mystical allure rooted in natural beauty that makes it a dream destination. Like 'A Year in Provence' and 'Under the Tuscan Sun,' "Maine At Last" is the story of making a new home in such a special place. A tidal wave of retiring baby-boomers is expected to head to Maine in the next decade and Himself and MsMOMA are leading the pack. The story began nearly sixty years ago when Himself came to Maine as a skinny lad of fourteen to be a lumberjack. He was deemed too small for that job, but he fell in love with Maine before he returned to New York City where he subsequently lived most of his life. MsMOMA is a Jersey gal and was ready for adventure when she retired to Maine with him in 2002. “We are a middle class couple with a literary bent, ordinary enough that our experience should resonate with many others and eccentric enough to be interesting.” "Maine, At Last, is the journal of that first year in Maine - the move, becoming acquainted with the new territory and its customs, the first restoration efforts on a historic (c.1840) house in the Down East coastal village of Cherryfield - The Wild Blueberry Capitol of the World - and the birth of the "Narraguagus News." Letters, emails, and a journal contribute to the immediacy and spontaneity of the narrative. They are real. Uncontrived. They provide uncensored windows into an individual's life and as such they are very revealing. "Maine, At Last" has become a series stretching to 9 volumes...thus far. This is volume one.

This book appealed to me because after growing up in Maine, moving away as a young adult, raising my family and reaching retirement age, I have often dreamt about doing what the author and her partner did: buy an old house in a picturesque community in Maine. Although the author is not a native Mainer the process of anyone leaving one place behind to take up residence in another always involves risk and searching for something lacking. That's why we read them. This little book is a chronicle of part of her process: she focuses mainly on the house as a year long work in progress with some side topics..especially Christmas decorating and preparations which seemed to consume a lot of her attention and energy. She purchased the house in 2002 and the book covers the time period from March 2002 to spring 2003; however the book was published in 2011 so it leaves the reader ( or at least me) with many questions: Are they still there?; How did their plans work out? ; How did they become members of the community? Why did they make a move from New Jersey? What was she looking for? Did she find it? The book feels like a middle without a clear beginning and no real conclusion. I feel the book would benefit from an epilogue that updates the reader.
Despite finding this aspect of the book unsatisfying, I do recommend it. It's always interesting when a writer allows a reader to share in a major life experience with them and people who take risks and defy convention are inherently fascinating. The kindle price of 2.99 is less than a magazine or a movie ticket: a tiny price to pay for sharing the dream even if it felt incomplete.

Maine At Last A Moving Memoir Msmoma 9781475166545 Books Reviews

New England is a place of enchantment. This author takes you there with her witty and descriptive stories. He sense of humor is worth the price of the book.
My first book review, but I have done a lot of movie reviews. I may no not flowery as many reviewerw, who are probably closeted writers. As with my movie reviews, I'm not going to rehash the plot. I just say how I felt. I have struggled though a lot of doggy books from new writers. I did not have to struggle with this one. It is a page turner, not a "stay up all night, to hell with work" page turner, but very good. If anyone has moved to a new but slightly alien community, attempted home repairs or improvements, you will relate very well. I have always wanted to go to the extents of the author, but lacked the bravery, the support, the will, or the money. I can relate from several times moving to an almost completely foreign environ; the disasters, or almost disasters, attempting to fit in, finding the right people, the right haunts, my right place in the community. I found myself looking at the percentage meter often(no more page numbers), and hoping I still had a long way to go. The code names are endearing and curious as in one referring to himself in the third person. I could not wait to meet "The Savage". This book is definitely not a waste of money or time. Very enjoyable, better than most.
I so enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one. Being familiar with many of the locations only increased my delight.
This is the first volume of a series. There are three out now and, hopefully, more to come soon. I have read and enjoyed all three for their humorous depiction of every day occurrences in the lives of a creative couple, who are restoring a 19th century house in Cherryfield, Maine, and learning about their surrounding in Down East Maine. I recommend reading all three and keeping an eye out for more volumes.
This was a sweet story of a move to Maine and an old house. It is written like a blog so it is easy to pick up and put down. But the story stayed engaging. I just worried that they wouldn't have it weather-proof before winter. They pleasantly fooled me.
I lived in Maine most of my life... I understand the approach the author took with this book....and it was an interesting read. I also have experienced first hand people who have moved to Maine thinking they are somewhat better, and something betwwen the lines in this book told me she was one. Just my observation, I am only one reader, many may disagree.
Loved, Loved, Loved this book!! My husband and I bought a home in Cherryfield, right around the corner from this house in 2000, on the Kansas Road. We planed to move there in 2016, when we retired. we are also from New Jersey and were pleasantly surprised to find our similarities. Sadly, my husband passed away in 2005, so I will be making the move by myself. That was daunting but after reading this book i feel a little better.
I hope to contact this lovely couple and become friends before the move. Making friends an getting involved in the community will surely alleviate some of the anxiety I feel as the time comes closer.
